Sun Devils Sweep The Cardinal Three Games

ASU's Brian Serven gets his first of two home runs against Stanford.

PHOENIX, ARIZONA (March 29, 2015) On an early spring afternoon with temperatures reaching 96 degrees, Arizona State University Sun Devil designated hitter Brian Serven gets five hits in five times at the plate, two of which were home runs scoring four in the seventh and eighth innings to lead the Sun Devils to victory over Pac-12 rival Stanford Cardinal by a score of 14-6 on Sunday, March 29 at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

During the postgame press meeting, Serven was asked about his batting performance and commented "Both times I was trying to barrel it up, stay up the middle and stay with the plan." When asked about what it's like to be a designated hitter, "There definitely is a different approach to the game when you're just hitting. When I'm DH-ing I can focus on hitting."  He finished with, "Yes, this was the best game I ever had".


Coach Tracey Smith had positive words to say about Brett Lilek's pitching performance."He needs to give us that kind of outing on Sunday. I'm very proud of him for what he did. He knew his back was up against the wall, he responded in a very very positive way." He then went on to say "You've got to take advantage of your opportunities...When you're at the low of the low...This past week we had a candid talk... you have to give results. I'm very proud of him, he knew where he stood, and he responded well. He did an excellent job today".

The Sun Devils will host New Mexico State in their next game on Tuesday, March 31 at 6:30 p.m. MST. The game will be played at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

ASU Hosts Water Polo Invitational Tournament

TEMPE, ARIZONA (March 22, 2015) The Arizona State University Sun Devils hosted the 2015 ASU Invitational Water Polo Tournament over the weekend, March 21 - 22 at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. Participating teams included Indiana Hoosiers, #15 Long Beach State 49ers, Redlands Bulldogs, Hartwick Hawks, #9 San Jose State Spartans, and #6 Arizona State Sun Devils.

On Saturday morning, Long Beach State opened the tournament by defeating Indiana in overtime 9-8 while Hartwick defeated Redlands 17-6. In the afternoon, Arizona State won in a commanding performance 12-4 over San Jose State. Indiana defeated Hartwick 9-6 and Long Beach State finished the day with a 16-2 victory over Redlands.

Sunday's matches included an early morning offensive show by San Jose State who won 20-1 over Redlands. Arizona State beat Indiana by a score 12-5 . Just before noon, Hartwick upset Long Beach State in a 7-6 match. 

In the afternoon, Indiana outperformed Redlands 20-4. #15 Long Beach State bounced back from their previous loss to hand Arizona State it's only loss of the weekend by a score 5-3.

The final game of the weekend was another high scoring performance by San Jose State who put up 21 goals to Hartwick's 7.

Long Beach State's next match is at Northridge on Saturday, March 28 at 12 p.m. PST.

San Jose State will visit #2 ranked Stanford at Avery Aquatics Complex on Saturday, April 4 at 1:00 p.m. PST.   


Next up for Indiana is a match against Notre Dame College in Euclid, Ohio on Saturday, March 28 at 12:00 p.m. ET.

Redlands will be at Chapman on Wednesday, March 25 at 4:00 p.m.

The Sun Devils host #2 Stanford Saturday, March 28 at 12:00 p.m. MST. The game will be played at Mona Plummer Aquatics Center in Tempe, Arizona.
 
Hartwick and Arizona State meet Saturday, March 28 at 5:00 p.m. MST at Mona Plummer Aquatics Center.

The Sun Devils Win 4-3 Over The Lobos In The Rain.

PHOENIX, ARIZONA (March 18, 2015) A little rain delayed the start of the game but did not delay the No. 7 ranked Arizona State University Sun Devils from scoring early in their 4-3 win over the New Mexico Lobos on Wednesday, March 18, at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

The Sun Devils scored early in the bottom of the first inning, then twice in the second inning to hold a lead until the seventh inning. In the seventh, the Lobos pulled together a two run performance to tie the game.

In the eighth inning, the Sun Devils' Colby Woodmansee scores from second base on a line drive shot to center field from Joey Bielek for the final run of the game.

The winning pitcher was Darin Gillies and Ryan Burr was credited with the save.

The #7 Sun Devils are traveling to #15 Oregon for a three game series beginning March 20, 21, and 22. After the three game road trip, they will return to host the Stanford Cardinal for a three game series on March 27,28 at 6:30p.m., and Sunday, March 29 at 12:30p.m. at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Sun Devils Get Tenth Win of Season

PHOENIX, ARIZONA  (March 11, 2015) The Arizona State University Sun Devils pull together a fifth inning four run rally against the UNLV Rebels to win their tenth game of the season by a score of 5-4 on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
 
The Sun Devils Ryan Burr adds to his record for saves.
 
The Sun Devils begin Pac-12 schedule this week on March 13,14, and 15 when they host the Oregon State Beavers for a three game series. Game one on Friday March 13 is at 6:30p.m. On Saturday  game time is 6p.m. Sunday's game starts at 1p.m. Saturday and Sunday will be televised on Pac-12 Networks. All games will take place at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Sun Devils Defeat the Dirtbags Two Out of Three

PHOENIX, ARIZONA (March 8, 2015) The Arizona State University Sun Devils had four runs in the eigth inning to seal the win over Long Beach State Dirtbags by a score of 9-3 on Sunday, March 8 at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. This was the second win of the three game weekend bringing  their season record to 9-5.
 
After a late comeback win by the Dirtbags in game two on Saturday evening, the Sun Devils were able to regroup and make adjustments to outperform  the Dirtbags on Sunday afternoon getting nine hits while the Dirtbags were held to five hits and two errors.
 
The Sun Devils host UNLV on Wednesday, March 11 at Phoenix Municipal Stadium at 6:30p.m.

Dirtbags Beat Sun Devils 4-2 in Game 2

PHOENIX, ARIZONA (March 7, 2015) - The Arizona State Sun Devils fall to the Long Beach State Dirtbags in game two of three by a score of 4-2 on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

The Sun Devils had a two run lead going into the top of the eigth inning when the Dirtbags' junior Zack Rivera (Tustin, CA) hit a three run home run over the left field wall.

In  the top of the ninth, the Dirtbags added another run making the final score 4-2.

The Dirtbags have a 9-5 record and will be heading home after Sunday's game to host San Diego State on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at 6 p.m. at Blair Field.
 
The Sun Devils are now 8-5 on the season and will host the Dirtbags on Sunday for the final of three games at 12:30 p.m. at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

ASU's Ryan Lillard receives a concussion during exhibition game

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA (March 3, 2015) The Arizona Diamondbacks, coached by Chip Hale, a former University of Arizona Wildcat Chip Hale who was a member of the 1986 championship team, defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils by a score of 4-0 in an exhibition game at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick on March 3, 2015.
 
The Arizona State Sun Devils' Coach Tracy Smith's goal was to "stay healthy". Unfortunately, one player receives a hand injury while another receives a concussion from a wild pitch.

When asked about the Diamondbacks and their new head coach, Coach Smith responded "You can see why he's going to do well." He also went on to say "The Diamondbacks have been good about taking our ASU guys under their wings.It's good to watch the pros and observe from the dugout."
 
The Sun Devils will be hosting the Long Beach State Dirtbags in a three game series at Phoenix Municipal Stadium starting Friday, March 6, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. and ending on Sunday, March 8, 2015.

Long Beach State Dirtbags Lose To Arizona State Sun Devils In Game 1

PHOENIX, ARIZONA (March 6, 2015) The Arizona State University Sun Devils hit three doubles in a row in the fifth inning to overcome a grand slam by Long Beach State Dirtbags in the fourth inning to win 6-4 in the first of a three game series starting Friday, March 6, 2015 at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. 
 

ASU's pitching staff averages over 10 strike outs per game
In last year's meeting, the Dirtbags took advantage of the Sun Devils 11-0 at Blair Field. In the first game of the weekend, the Dirtbags were held to four runs, six hits, and had two errors. The Sun Devils scored 6 runs on 13 hits with one error.

The Sun Devils pitching threw for 13 strike outs, giving Seth Martinez the win. Ryan Burr extends his all-time record for saves by striking out two batters in the top of the ninth inning.

The Sun Devils will host the Dirtbags on Saturday, March 7 at 6:30 p.m. for the second game of the series.
 
The Long Beach State Dirtbags will head home after this three game series to host  San Diego State on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at 6 P.M. at Blair Field.
 
After this three game series, The Sun Devils will be hosting UNLV on Wednesday, March 11  
at 6:30 P.M. at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
